“It's supposed to hurt - that's how you know it meant something!” ~~Rick Elice, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER
Does my Crush like me? Does my Crush NOT like me? Oooh, a text, is it from my Crush? Are we going out again? Should I wear this skirt or this top or lipstick or no makeup or wait -- what if I need rescuing because my date turns out to be horrible and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
Dating can feel overwhelming at times, but the butterflies and uncertainty of it can teach you so much about yourself. The first kiss, gabbing about someone you’re crushing on with your friends, hoping every buzz of your phone is some kind of contact – it can make you crazy or it can be exciting and fun!
Staying focused and in the present moment can help you enjoy the rollercoaster you’re on. When you put yourself on fast forward, picking out curtains for a future home or prematurely naming your first (unborn) child, you put lots of pressure on a beautiful new beginning that is just starting to blossom. The future is made by living each moment in the present; take it one step at a time and the rest will take care of itself!
The other part of this that can feel frightening is simply putting yourself out there. You have to go for it – to risk getting hurt, to risk being disappointed, to risk putting yourself out there and being vulnerable and open and surrendering to the moment. At some point, you just have to give up the scaredy-cat feelings and simply JUMP IN. That’s what life is all about, isn’t it, which is living fully? Amidst all the fluttery feelings and chemistry and newfound warmth and smiles in your heart, you’ve discovered another human being you truly resonate with. You can’t know at this point whether or not that person will be with you for the long haul. But you’ll never find that out if you never give it a chance.
Go ahead. Dip your toe in the water. See how it feels and what your inner wisdom tells you. And then dive in with wild abandon and commit to the journey!
